ZTE snubs Windows Phone

ZTE has confirmed it has experimented with Windows Phone prototypes in its engineering labs, but has decided the Microsoft OS is not yet popular enough for it to be worth its while putting devices into production. According to ZTE UK, speaking to the WSJ, there are also concerns over the platform’s performance. While ZTE may not be a company with high brand recognition among consumers, it in fact holds a top five spot in the world mobile phone rankings.

The company not only produces low-cost handsets for developing markets – increasingly an area of Microsoft’s focus with its new partners Nokia – but OEM devices rebadged by carriers. Several of ZTE’s Android smartphones have proved budget best-sellers, and the company brought several new models along to MWC 2011 last month.

“We have active R&D plans on the whole Windows Phone 7 platform product” Wu Sa, ZTE UK director of mobile device operations confirmed, but went on to say that “wether we expedite that process will be driven by the market demand. …The usability of this platform in terms of its user-friendliness and the networks in terms of bringing the product to the market”. The company apparently hopes to establish its own brand in the same manner that HTC did in recent years.

Review: Mobile Games Roundup

Karoshi! Wings! Dig! Jet! Puckerz!

Is it that time already? Apparently so. And it's another improbably decent line-up of games determined to suck up all the time that you definitely don't have.

It's definitely a good sign that two of this week's roster gobbled up about 12 hours of my time between them. It could have been even more, but then you wouldn't have a roundup this week, and we couldn't have that, could we?

As a personal plea to all the mobile game developers out there, I'd be extremely grateful if you could just stop releasing games for a couple of weeks. Just a couple. The 'to-play' list is getting ridiculous, and it's not fair on all those great games I'm not telling you about.

Review: Download Games Roundup

Gemini! Hoard! Flux! CreaVures! Rustle!

It might be enjoying the extra daylight of a full review elsewhere, but it's worth dwelling on the joy of seeing neglected classics like Beyond Good & Evil 'remastered' in HD for the download generation.

Unlike SEGA's bizarrely shoddy treatment of its Dreamcast titles (to date), Ubisoft deserves enormous credit for bothering to cast a backward glance at a title that would have otherwise slunk into retro obscurity. Seeing such an enduring gem of game generate such excitement the second time around makes me wonder what other games from generations gone by warrant a similar second chance - apart from ICO and Shadow Of The Colossus, obviously.

System Shock 2 immediately springs to mind, as does the original Project Zero. Hey, how about Amplitude and Frequency, or Gregory Horror Show? And wouldn't it be nice if Capcom could bring us an HD Resident Evil 4 while we're at it?

Can?t Move Menubar In Internet Explorer 9

Microsoft for some unknown reason has made the decision to hide the menubar in Internet Explorer 9 by default. Some users are apparently able to display the menubar permanently by right-clicking on free space in one of the toolbars and selecting the menu bar from the available options. Others do not see the menu bar [...]

Review: Top Spin 4

Smash hit.

In this era of annual sports updates churned out with metronomic regularity, it's rare for the latest version of anything to be greeted with the grand expectations that accompany big-name sequels in other genres. Whether it was a carefully plotted strategy or a consequence of shifting development to 2K Czech though, the near three-year wait for a fourth Top Spin has put us in the rare position of being quite excited about its arrival.

But let's not get the strawberries and cream in just yet. Tennis games were more or less perfected over a decade ago, and most of what has been served up since Virtua Tennis (and its even better sequel) has been trying desperately to live up to Hitmaker's astonishing achievements. Top Spin 3 got closest to nailing it, but added depth that was so poorly explained that it took an age to understand what it wanted from you.

2K knew it had to do a far better job of easing players into the game, while still retaining some of that depth that more committed players demand, and from the moment you enter the fourth game's helpful Top Spin Academy you get the sense of a more measured, patient approach that tries to teach you the full array of shots as well as the strategy behind them.

Sprint To Restart Android 2.2 Froyo Update For Samsung Epic 4G

Samsung Epic 4G owners have been stuck without the Android 2.2 Froyo update that was promised but halted almost a month ago. But now it appears that Sprint and Samsung have worked things out and the OTA updates will resume starting Monday.

Sprint’s first attempt to update the Epic 4G to Android 2.2 Froyo was plagued with various problems including messing up data connectivity and impairing access to media stored on the SD card. The only solution for many Epic 4G owners was to do a hard reset, which wiped out all their data.

The new update coming this Monday, March 21, will bring Epic 4G devices up to Android Froyo 2.2.1 EC05 and the entire process may take the whole week to finish as updates are rolled out in batches over-the-air. If you are an Epic 4G owner needing the update, be sure to backup everything first!

Review: Mindjack

Worth plugging.

The worst hacks aren't the kind that infiltrate security systems or unravel consoles, but the kind that write. A careless opinion spreads even faster than malicious code and can be just as destructive.

Mindjack, sadly, is a game destined to fall victim to such opinions. I know that because, as I booted the game up, one thought stood out in my mind: that this was going to be bad. An unheralded, low-budget, third-person shooter from Japan? Made by a hodgepodge development team of questionable experience? Published by Square Enix, of all companies? I couldn't help but doubt.

For the first few hours, those doubts were justified. Over the following eight, however, they slowly began to dissipate, before turning into outright respect.

Review: Pokmon Black & White

Monochrome magic.

If you're on the outside looking in, the Pokmon series probably looks like the same game released over and over for 15 years, each time to fresh brood of gullible children. It's not a fair or correct assumption, but I can see where you're coming from.

Pokmon reinvents itself to a greater or lesser extent every three years or so, but half-steps like Platinum and remakes like HeartGold muddy the distinction between generations. And where Silver and Gold's astonishing sprawl of new features more than justified their existence (and their re-release last year), Diamond and Pearl's more timid adjustments to the formula were less defensible.

It's about time for a spring-clean, and Pokmon Black and White are exactly that. Game Freak has abandoned the guaranteed brand recognition of Pikachu and his 500-odd friends for an entirely new cast of 156 quirky, endearing, and occasionally disturbing monsters. It's difficult to overstate how unexpectedly brave this is for a heavyweight Japanese series; imagine Capcom releasing a new Street Fighter without Ryu and Ken. It signals an eagerness to break with the past, a new spirit of regeneration.

Spring Has Sprung At Brooklyn Botanic Garden

While you won't find any cherry blossoms blooming in these photos, they do show evidence that things are happening. Big things. Nature things. Pretty, growing things. Check out the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Flickr for more photos of what's happening over there. We checked in with them to get a status update on when the cherry blossoms are expected to bloom this year, and will update when we hear back. Currently the map shows no action, but their annual Hanami celebration (typically showcasing the cherry blossoms) begins on April 2nd (and runs through May 1st). [ more ? ]
