If you're off to Kazakhstan anytime soon � and I hear the weather is just lovely � be sure not to, you know, fall down any holes. I only say that because, if Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars is anything to go by, the landscape there � as well as in a handful of other former Soviet hotspots � is absolutely riddled with gullies, gulches, crevices and canyons.

Normally, I'd put this down to the glinting, shifty-eyed presence of Tom Clancy, chewing thoughtfully on a pulled-pork sandwich while he spit-balls game ideas over IM with his good buddy Glenn Beck. "Those Commies, or whatever they are these days," he might type. "Not even the ground wants anything to do with them." In reality, though, the frequent pitfalls are probably due to the hardware, as it's tricky to make a turn-based strategy launch title that shows off the 3DS' magical top screen without them.

Ridiculous as it sounds, the third dimension genuinely adds something to Shadow Wars. Not in mechanical terms, necessarily � although your cel-shaded units do stand out from the gloomy landscapes a bit more than they otherwise would � but in terms of the overall feel.

If you tried to fire up your PS3 and go onto the PSN last night and today, you have undoubtedly noticed that the network is down. This is an irritation to all PS3 users even if you don?t play games that require the network since many of them will constantly ask you if you want to connect to the network. I know Gran Turismo 5 nearly drove me crazy asking last night when I realized the network was down. The interesting part about this outage is that Sony apparently has no idea what caused it.

Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold wrote on the official Playstation Blog, “While we are investigating the cause of the Network outage, we wanted to alert you that it may be a full day or two before we’re able to get the service completely back up and running.” This means that over the long Easter weekend you are likely to be without any trophy gathering capability. In GT5, that alone means no online racing or online car dealership.

Apparently, in Europe Sony has noted that it is investigating the possibility that the network was taken down by an outside party. The PSN outage could very well be the result of an attack from a hacker group like anonymous. The timing is even worse in that this is the launch weekend for SOCOM 4 and the game is heavily focused on the online play aspects. There will be a lot of unhappy gamers the next few days.

Earlier this week, the president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, the union for the NYPD's front-line supervisors, vigorously defended the conduct of police officers caught in a massive ticket-fixing scheme probe. But Mayor Bloomberg begged to differ, and argued this morning that there's a world of difference between dismissing parking tickets and dismissing more serious offenses: "These are all not parking tickets. These are moving violation tickets that we're talking about, which is...a lot more serious because maybe you were drunk driving, or maybe speeding if you kill somebody whereas, parking could be in front of a fire hydrant, which could be dangerous or at a crossing, it's an inconvenience." Video: NYPD Helicopter Rescues Stranded Fisherman

Officers in an NYPD helicopter rescued a man who was stranded on a rock jetty in Raritan Bay yesterday, after high winds stranded his boat there. Timothy Shanahan Sr., 65, and his son, Timothy Jr., 22, ran aground onto a rocky jetty near Morgan Creek, on the south side of the bay, the Star-Ledger reports. Timothy Jr. was, according to the Post, able to walk the 400 yards back to shore through the shallow waters, aided by NYPD scuba divers. But the elder Shanahan, who reportedly told the officers he had 10 prior heart attacks and four strokes, had to be airlifted out. Apple is one of the more innovative tech firms around. Love the company or hate it I don?t think anyone will argue with the fact that the gang in Cupertino is an innovative lot. We see more than a few patents surface with tech that sounds out there at times. I never doubt that Steve and co won’t cram that tech into some future smartphone or other device though. A new patent app has turned up that outlines an interesting new peer-to-peer sharing technology that may one day find its way into our iPhones and iPads.

Thanks to the RIAA, peer-to-peer has a bit of a negative connotation to it. This isn?t tech to allow two iPhone users to share much without having to pay. Exactly what it would be used for or when we will see it is unknown. I can see this being a great way to share photos and video files between users. The patent gives up some details on how the service would work. It will use a unique magnetic compass and encoded supersonic tone method to transfer files.

The tech will also allow the user to quickly and wirelessly transfer their files and data to their computer or other device too. I have to think this could very well be the tech that brings wireless sync to iTunes. The feature will use NFC tech making for fast setups that need no configuration. Am I the only one that finds it curious that the line art drawing Apple choose in the patent filing looks sort of like an iPhone, but has that keypad?
